Flick #5- April 22nd
What a difference a week can make! After getting hit by last week's nor'easter, that dumped about 5 inches of rain on the area and sidelined all the crew teams for a solid 4 days, this weekend rebounded nicely with outstanding rowing conditions. The weather at the 10 am start was around 75 and the winds were very light. The sun was shining and the tent was fully stocked with a great selection of breakfast foods. First up for Heart Crew was the JV Double of Brittany Lorenz in stroke and Chynna Mela in bow. This boat had its best finish so far this season placing 2nd with a lot of open water behind them. This boat is continuing to improve every week. Right after the Jv Double came the Novic Quad of Wadkins, McDevitt, McClatchy and Scorzetti. This boat had there best race of the season leading start to finish, beating the 2nd place boat by 15 seconds. They really looked good today! The nest heat featured two Sacred Heart Freshman boats. The first boat was rowed by Froio, Burrichter Schena, and Melchiorre, and the other boat was featured Keefer, Neumann, Rodgers, and Christianson. Both boats had outstanding races and were even with the Conestoga boat as they went past the tent. Unfortunately, Conestoga had enough of a kick at the end to edge one of our boats by 1.77 seconds and the other by 3.19 seconds. Both boats put up a good fight and will be back stronger than ever next week! Following a couple of sweep boats events, the next sculling events were two heats of JV quads. This week was the first time Heart went head to head with Conestoga. Unfortunately, Sacred Heart couldn't catch the Conestoga boat who finished second to Springside, leaving the Heart Quad in third place. Next up, the Lightweight Double rowed by seniors Jill Nentwig and Emily Greenwald. After edging Conestoga 3 weeks ago, by less than a second, this was a long awaited rematch. It appeared that our LWs were able to hold off Conestoga the entire race, and beat the Conestoga boat by just under 5 seconds. The final race for Sacred Heart was the varsity Quad, rowed by Hudome, Hayburn, Rauscher, and Vasmanis. This boat had an excellent race this week, holding off Episcopal for second place. This boat really closed the gap on Conestoga, finishing just 4.79 seconds behind them. The team really pulled it together this week and picked up the more points than any other sculling team this week. For the full results, click HERE. Next up....Cooper Cup.

Flick #3- April 1st
April Fools day was overcast and in the 50's. The Girl's events were all scheduled for the afternoon session. Winds were calm but the forecast was for rain. The first out on the course was the JV Double or Mela and Lorenz. The conditions this week were much better for this boat and they looked very strong as they cruised past the tent. They finished strong just a few seconds out of second place. This boat looks promising and willl continue to get faster every week. The next entry for Sacred Heart was the Novice Quad rowed by Scorzetti, McClatchy, McDevitt , and Watkins. After recovering from some early crabs, the boat picked up some momentum at the 500m mark only to be cut off by the Springside boat who started in Lane 2 and finished in Lane 5. The boat looked like they got it gear at the tent and finished strong in 3rd place. The next up were two Freshman Quads racing each other in the same heat. Quad A was rowed by Froio, Schena, Melchiorre, and Burrichter. Quad B was rowed by Rodgers, Keefer, Neumann, and Christiansen. Both boats looked good finishing in 2nd and 3rd place behind the Conestoga boat. Great things are in store for these two boats! The next event for Heart Crew was the JV Quad of "white Hat" Swanick, Greenwald, Sears-Rivera, and MacCrory. This boat is always competitive but could not quite catch the Ridgewood boat, finishing in second place. The good news is we are in striking distance of the Springside and Conestoga boats which raced in the other heat. Next up, the LW Double of Greenwald and Nentwig. After last weeks tight race with Conestoga, the girls responded this week with a very close race, edging the Conestoga boat in the last 100M, for first place. The cheers of the Malvern Crew at the finish may have made the difference. These two boats will be battling the rest of the season! The final event was the Varsity Quad, rowed by Vasmanis, Rauscher, Hayburn, and Hudome. They battled hard all the way down the course and were neck and neck with Episcopal at the tent. Unfortunately, Episcopal had a little bit more kick at the end and edged out our boat for second place by less than 2 seconds! This boat will continue to get faster and they will be ready for a rematch on the 15th! The full results are HERE.
Flick #2- March 25th
After a snowy weekend the week before, the weather improved dramatically for the 2nd Flick. It was sunny and about 50 degrees at 7 am but by 9 the skies were cloudy and the wind picked up- not ideal rowing conditions! Heart crew entered 6 boats for this Flick. The first out was a JV Double with Brittany Lorenz and Chynna Mela. Strong winds and currents made the course challenging and the Double performed well coming in third place. Next up was the inaugural race for two novice quads. Fighting winds all the way up to the start, it appeared that they just made the start. As one of the boats turned to get ready to start they were hit by an eight. The one quad was rowed by LaToya Watkins, Ariana McDevitt, Colleen McClatchy, and Grace Scorzetti, The second quad featured Christin Melchiorre, Kristin Keefer, Emily Burrichter, and Giana Schena. All the boats were even after 500 yards until an eight crossing the course forced one of our quads to change lanes to avoid a collision. Unfortunately they never recovered from this setback but finished strong in 2nd and 3rd place. The next boat to race was the JV Quad rowed by Maraid MacCrory, Lauren Sears-Rivera, Sarah Greenwald, and Betsy Swanick. The Quad jumped out to an early lead and never looked backed. They won their heat with plenty of open water between them and the field. By this time the weather was starting to improve and the sun was peaking through. Most importantly, the wind was dying down, which was a good thing for our LW Double. The Double was rowed by Jill Nentwig and Emily Greenwald. Holy Spirit jumped out to an early lead followed by Sacred Heart and Conestoga. Our girls ended up in a tight race for second place with Conestoga, getting edged out at the finish by less than a second. After a an hour and half break, our final race was the Varsity Quad, rowed by Kelsey Hudome, Regina Hayburn, Kerby Rauscher, and Kristin Vasmanis. By now the conditions were ideal and the fans were able to shed some layers as the sun shined bright. The Sacred Heart boat looked awesome coming past the tent just a few seconds behind the Conestoga boat. They finished strong by holding off Episcopal to place second. All in all, an excellent day of racing and a great start to the season for Heart Crew. Full Results HERE. Next up Flick #3!
